iTrace for Blood Centers receives FDA 510(k) clearance

Auto-ID based tracking system developed as a result of a National Institute of Health STTR Grant secures FDA 510(k) pre-market clearance, SysLogic initiates transfer to S3Edge.

needed innovation to the market in a collaborative manner. The FDA 510(k) clearance and commercialization will ensure that the cumulative efforts of the consortium benefit the transfusion medicine industry as a whole”,
said Lynne Briggs VP and CIO at BloodCenter of Wisconsin. “Our pilot of iTrace for Blood Centers showed marked improvements in efficiency and accuracy in reconciling and tracking blood products from collections
through distribution”.

those of IPR in terms of detecting and resolving process errors. It additionally provided the blood bank staff real-time visibility for blood products in transit to the point-of-care and in remote storage in our emergency department. FDA clears first blood tracking device (iTrace for Blood Centers) that uses Radio Frequency Identification technology

The iTrace for Blood Centers device has the ability to enhance blood safety by helping to ensure that unsuitable units are not released,” said Karen Midthun, M.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. “iTrace for Blood Centers will be used in blood establishments by trained personnel as a tool in streamlining blood collection and processing and aiding in product tracking and reconciliation.”

S3Edge is proud to announce that iTrace for Blood Centers, the first application to use Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology in blood establishments to assist in enhancing blood safety by preventing the release of unsuitable blood components, was cleared today by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The device was cleared for marketing based on the submission of a premarket notification, often referred to as a 510(k). A 510(k) submission made to the FDA demonstrates that the device is at least as safe and effective as, that is, substantially equivalent to, a legally marketed device that is not subject to a premarket application.

This is a significant milestone in the commercialization of iTrace for Blood Centers (developed and owned by S3Edge as part of the Transfusion Medicine RFID Consortium – read more here), and we look forward to working with Blood Centers and Hospitals world-wide to deploy this key piece of technology to keep our blood supply safe, secure, and operationally efficient.

Consortium Pilot Finds RFID Improves Efficiency of Blood Supply Chain

An interesting snippet from the piece that captures the essence of the overall solution:

The consortium found that the use of RFID during the pilot resulted in a 33 percent reduction in reconciliation issues or misplaced products at the blood-donation points, as well as an 87 percent decrease in reconciliation issues or misplaced products when blood arrived at BloodCenter of Wisconsin’s headquarters. In addition, efficiency during final inventory check-in at the BloodCenter of Wisconsin increased by 63 percent. At the hospital, product visibility was improved and the correct blood product was delivered to patient bedsides without a single error, for a total of 144 transfusions.

Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant First in the Industry to Debut Auto-ID Foreign Material Exclusion Tracking Program

Another feather in S3Edge’s cap as we enable yet another mission-critical Auto-ID solution (in the Energy vertical)  for compliance and tracking – in this case delivered and administered by our partner Access Solutions & Siemens (ive in operation since April of this year) for FME services at  Florida Power & Light’s Turkey Point reactor.

Here’s a gist of what is being said about the new automation system for tool and personnel tracking (STARtrac) powered by S3Edge’s Spotlight software.

“Our system is the first of its kind in the nuclear industry,” explained Velma Brunt, one of two FME accountability technicians in the steam generator work area. “Basically how it works is we scan the individual’s badge and the tools they’re carrying into the work area. Once the person is ready to exit, we rescan their badge and tools. The system automatically alerts us of any materials left behind.”

Over 15,000 tools in the plant were Auto-ID enabled in advance of the EPU project. Many hand tools were equipped with radio frequency identification microchips for efficient scanning. The rest were laser-imprinted with bar codes or marked with identification numbers. Doug Sodaro, PTN’s safety manager, hopes the program will be a great tool in keeping the plant team in Prevention mode. “We use a lot of materials on a daily basis, which means we have to constantly mitigate FME risks. This tool is very useful in that it allows us to have Strong Ownership & Accountability over FME.”

Transfusion Medicine RFID Consortium selects S3Edge to commercialize RFID and barcode based Blood Product Tracking suite of applications

The Transfusion Medicine RFID Consortium today announced that S3Edge would exclusively be leading the commercialization*  efforts of the Blood Center and Hospital applications that have been designed and built by the consortium members (BloodCenter of Wisconsin, SysLogic, Inc., S3Edge Inc., Carter Bloodcare, Mississippi Blood Services, the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Mississippi Baptist Health System, University of Wisconsin Madison – RFID Laboratory, and Mediware Corp.) over the last 5 years.

A marathon runner is what comes to mind when I think about what the year has meant to us – it’s been a while since I posted an update on all the activity out here in S3Edge land and I can tell you the last 8 months have been…well a marathon!

We’ve been heads down working away at deploying mission-critical auto-ID based solutions across verticals and I can tell you that the customers we have live in deployment this year are large enterprise accounts across Manufacturing, Logistics, Healthcare, Energy & Financial – a couple of which are Fortune 50 accounts – using our SW in a live production environment as their primary system, and  tracking hundreds of thousands of assets across their operations.

Over the next few months, I hope to bring you more news / details about these deployments which I am extremely proud of and I think would mean a lot to the industry as a whole in terms of the benefits they are seeing. So stay tuned for more – we are as they say In it to win it and there’s lots of interesting deployments from the land of mission-critical auto-ID solutions leading the way in getting to the finish line!

RIP Charlie Walton

Sad day for the industry earlier this week, but a day of remembrance and gratitude to a man who rarely gets talked about as the inventor of RFID; Hat-tip and kudos to behind-the-scenes inventors who have created entire industries and eco-systems that have in turn created countless opportunities for others!
